Instagram Stories, an ephemeral stories feature that launched in August and that now boasts 100 million users, has added three new features.
Here’s what you need to know about the new additions to Instagram Stories – a mini-video format called Boomerang, mentions, and links.
Instagram now lets create Stories using a “Boomerang” mode. Instagram described how it works:
“Swipe right from your feed to open the stories camera. A new format picker under the record button lets you select ‘Boomerang’ mode. Tap record and the camera will stitch together a burst of photos into a mini video that plays forward and backward. Then share it to your story.”
You can now mention up to 10 users in your Instagram Stories. It works the same way as it does when adding names to captions or comments, by typing @ and then selecting the person you want to mention.
Whenever you do this, those users will receive a notification that you mentioned them. They will also receive a direct message that includes a preview of your story (the preview vanishes after 24 hours).
The user names of any people you mention in your Instagram story will appear with an underline. Tapping on any user name will open up a popup and that leads to their profile.
Also, anytime someone else mentions you (including people you don’t follow), you’ll receive a notification in your message requests.
Instagram is also testing a feature that allows you to add links within your stories. However, only verified accounts can add links to their Instagram Stories right now.
For example, a brand can now link to an article on their blog or even to a specific product for purchase. This is definitely an addition that should make many marketers happy.
When you add a link to your story, people will see “See More” at the bottom of the screen. Users can tap to view that link inside the Instagram app.
